Health insurance for newborns (from 2.8.)

From 2 August 2021, newborn children of foreigners in the Czech Republic will be obligatorily insured in the public health insurance system.

Who is affected by the change?

A child born in the Czech Republic whose mother has a long-term residence permit in the Czech Republic at the time of birth and whose father is not a permanent resident.

When will the child be covered by public health insurance?

The child will be covered by public health insurance from the day of birth.

Until when will the child be covered by public health insurance?

The child will be covered by the public health insurance system for two months, specifically until the end of the month in which the child reaches 60 days of age. For the child’s further stay, it is necessary to purchase private complex health insurance.

Who do I need to report the birth of my child to?

The birth of the child must be announced within 8 days to the health insurance company, where is insured the child’s mother. If the mother does not have public health insurance in the Czech Republic, the birth of the child must be announced to the health insurance company where the father of the child is insured. If the father is not insured in the Czech Republic, the birth of the child shall be reported to the Všeobecná zdravotní pojišťovna České republiky.

How much will the insurance cost?

Double amount of monthly payments, which pay the persons without taxable income. In 2021, the full amount is CZK 4104.

When do I need to pay the insurance fee?

Insurance is charged in one payment for the entire period, at any time during the 60 days period.
